The IU172 New Student Seminar is a one-credit course designed to help students transition to CSU through self-awareness, reflection, and planning. The following analyses assessed several student success outcomes that could be influenced by a student’s participation in the New Student Seminar. These included course success rates, cumulative GPA, and persistence/graduation rates. As another goal of the New Student Seminar is to aid students in choosing a major, major declaration was also included as an outcome measure.
The results in this report focus on students from the FA16 through FA24 cohorts who enrolled in IU172 FA16 through SP25. The population has been limited to those students who took IU172 in either their first fall or first spring at CSU. (Of the 2,982 total students in the FA16 to FA24 cohorts, only 21 took UI in their second year or later; these students have been excluded.) Students who participated in Key Communities, a first-year student-oriented program, were also excluded (124 students) from these analyses to further isolate the potential impacts of IU172 on first year students’ experiences. Comparisons to reference populations based on the three most recent cohorts provide additional context for understanding the potential impacts of the IU172 seminar. Details for the reference groups are provided in the Appendix.
Summary of Results
Overall, the timing of IU172, first fall or first spring, did not have much influence on success outcomes. Outcomes tended to be similar between fall and spring enrollees with the exception of DFW rates in IU172 and second fall probation rates. These metrics were slightly higher for spring students compared to fall students.
The overall second fall probation rate for new IU17 students was slightly higher than the overall CSU rate, while first generation (FG), limited income (LI)1, and racially minoritized (RM) students had rates similar to those of the CSU averages of these groups. Probation rates were highest among students recommended for support (SRS)2, though similar to other new SRS students at CSU. The second fall persistence rates of new FG, LI, RM, and SRS students in IU172 were higher compared to the CSU averages for all FG, LI, and RM students. The four-year graduation rates for IU172 FG, LI, and RM were lower than their similar peers, yet by their six-year IU172 students had higher graduation rates than similar students. Compared to all new Exploratory Studies students, IU172 students declared their majors at rates about 5 to 10 percentage points higher.
In general, transfer IU172 students exhibited favorable outcomes, especially in the areas of major declaration among Exploratory Studies students. Compared to all transfer students, UI172 transfer students persisted at a higher rate, as did FG and LI transfer IU172 students when compared to all transfer FG and LI transfer students. Graduation rates for transfer IU172 students varied, with the overall four-year rate for all IU172 transfer students lower than the overall CSU average but LI IU172 students graduating at a higher rate.
Success Outcomes Overall
Table 1 displays student success outcomes for new and transfer cohort students by timing of IU172 enrollment. While students typically took IU172 during their first fall semester, the timing of enrollment in IU172 did not appear to impact student performance. Outcomes tended to be similar between fall versus spring enrollees with the exception of DFW rates in IU172 and second fall probation rates, which were slightly higher in for spring students compared to fall students. From a capacity perspective, it is important to note there are not meaningful differences in outcomes based on offering the course in the fall or spring semester.
Overall, more than four in five new IU172 students persisted to their second fall and 9 in 10 transfer IU172 students persisted to their second fall. These persistence rates were similar to the overall rates of three most recent new and transfer cohorts (86.2% and 87.9%, respectively; see Table 2 and Table 3 in the Appendix). Second fall cumulative GPA averaged around 3.0 for both new and transfer students and was similar to the overall CSU average (about 3.2).
About two in five new IU172 students graduated by their fourth year, increasing to almost two in three by their sixth year. Compared to overall CSU rates, new IU172 rates were slightly lower at the fourth year (42.4% new IU172 versus 49.5% CSU overall) and rose to match the overall by the sixth year (65.1% new IU172 versus 65.9% CSU overall).
Graduation rates for transfer IU172 students were steady with about two in three students graduating by either their fourth, fifth, or sixth year. The four- and five-year rates were about two percentage points lower than the overall CSU transfer student graduation rates (63.2% and 62.9% transfer IU172 versus 65.5% and 69.0% CSU overall) while the six-year rate was about six percentage points lower (65.5% transfer IU172 versus 71.7% CSU overall).

Success Outcomes for Student Subgroups
The following analyses examine success outcomes for student subgroups of interest including: – First generation – Limited income – Racially minoritized – Students recommended for support
Key metrics examined include DFW rates in IU172, second fall probation, persistence, and graduation, as well as major declaration for incoming Exploratory Studies students. Due to the low number of transfer students identified as SRS (N = 2), these students were excluded from the analyses in the body of the report, though data are available in the Appendix.
Reference rates for CSU overall and subgroups are available in Table 2 and Table 3 of the Appendix and are discussed throughout this report.
DFW and Probation Rates
Figure 1 displays the IU172 DFW and probation rates for first generation (FG), limited income (LI), racially minoritized (RM), and students recommended for support (SRS) by cohort type, new or transfer. Reference rates for CSU and subgroups overall are available in Table 2 and Table 3 of the Appendix.
Among new IU172 students, DFW and probation rates were highest among SRS students (9.7% DFW and 8.8% probation SRS versus 7.2% DFW and 5.9% probation all IU172). RM students’ DFW and probation rates were slightly higher than the overall IU172 average, while FG and LI students were similar to the overall IU172 average.
Though a DFW rate was not calculated at the overall CSU level, the overall probation rate for all new students was 5.3% (see Table 2), slightly lower than the rates observed among new IU172 students. FG (7.8%), LI (7.0%), and RM (7.8%) students in IU172 had second fall probation rates on par with overall CSU averages (7.6%, 7.2%, and 7.2%, respectively).
IU172 transfer students had lower DFW and probation rates compared to their new peers. Among the subgroups of interest, only RM students earned DFW grades in IU172 courses (1.3%). The overall second fall probation rates for IU172 transfer students (5.0%) was slightly higher than the overall CSU transfer student rate (3.7%, see Table 3).
Among transfer student subgroups of interest, IU172 FG students’ second fall probation rate was lower than the overall CSU FG transfer students rate ( 3.6% IU172 versus 5.4% transfer FG); LI (6.6%) and RM (5.3%) IU172 students’ rates were slightly higher than the overall CSU rates for these transfer student subgroups (4.3% LI and 4.8% RM).
Persistence
Figure 2 displays the second and fourth fall persistence rates for new and transfer IU172 students, overall and by student subgroup. Reference rates for CSU and subgroups overall are available in Table 2 and Table 3 of the Appendix.
Overall and across student subgroups, about 8 in 10 new IU172 students persisted to their second fall; fourth fall persistence dropped to about every 7 in 10 students. Compared to the overall CSU average (86.2%), the overall IU172 second fall persistence rate (84.7%) was slightly lower. Yet, second fall persistence rates for FG, LI, and RM students in IU172 were about one to two percentage points higher than the overall averages for these groups (e.g., 81.4% IU172 FG versus 80.3% CSU FG). Notably, SRS IU172 students persisted to their second fall at a rate that was about three percentage points higher than the overall SRS average (82.7% IU172 SRS versus 79.3% CSU SRS).
A similar pattern emerged for fourth fall persistence with the overall IU172 rate being slightly lower than the university average (71.7% all IU172 versus 73.2% all CSU) and FG, LI, RM, and SRS IU172 students having fourth fall persistence rates similar to or higher than their CSU peers (e.g., 69.3% LI IU172 versus 64.1% all LI CSU).
About 9 in 10 transfer IU172 students persisted to their second fall (90.4%); FG (91.7%) and LI (92.5%) students persisted at slightly higher rates compared to all transfer IU172 students. Transfer RM IU172 students persisted at a lower rate (85.5%). Compared to all transfer students, IU172 transfer students persisted at a higher rate, as did FG and LI transfer students when compared to all transfer FG and LI transfer students.
More than three-quarters of transfer IU172 persisted to their fourth fall (78.4%); FG (79.3%), LI (81.1%), and RM (73.1%) students has similar fourth fall persistence rates. These rates were higher than the rates observed for all transfer students (75.5%), as well as FG (68.1%), LI (73.1%), and RM (72.9%) students.
Major Declaration
A goal of the IU172 seminar is to help students who have not selected a major (enrolled as Exploratory Studies students within Intra-University). Figure 3 displays the share of incoming Exploratory Studies students (cohort college of IU) in IU172 who declared a major by their third fall. Reference rates for CSU and subgroups overall are available in Table 2 and Table 3 of the Appendix.
Two out of three (66.5%) new Exploratory Studies students in IU172 declared a major by third fall. Major declaration rates among FG, LI, RM, and SRS were lower, about three out of five of these students declared majors by their third fall (e.g., 62.2% RM and 62.0% FG declaring).
Compared to all new Exploratory Studies students, IU172 students declared their majors at rates about 5 to 10 percentage points higher. The overall third fall major declaration rate for new Exploratory Studies students was 61.5% compared to 66.5% for all IU172 Exploratory Studies students. FG IU172 declared their majors about 10 percentage points higher than all FG new Exploratory Studies students (62.0% versus 51.8%). LI and SRS IU172 declared their majors about nine percentage points higher than the overall peer rate (64.6% IU172 LI and 59.6% IU172 SRS versus 55.7% all LI and 50.5% all SRS), and RM IU172 students about six percentage points higher than all new Exploratory Studies RM students (62.2% IU172 RM versus 55.8% all RM).
More than three-quarters (77.3%) of transfer Exploratory Studies IU172 students declared a major by their third fall. RM student declared their majors at a similar rate (62.2%) while FG and LI students declared at higher rates (62.0% and 64.6%, respectively).
Similar to new Exploratory Studies IU172 students, transfer Exploratory Studies students declared their majors at rates higher than CSU transfer Exploratory Studies students (77.3% versus 68.6%). Rates for FG and LI IU172 were much higher than the overall CSU rates (88.2% IU172 FG and 85.2% LI versus 59.7% all FG and 63.2% LI). RM IU172 (73.9%) declared their majors at a rate five percentage points higher than all RM (68.9%) Exploratory Studies students.
Graduation
To assess potential longer-term impacts of the IU172 seminar, Figure 4 provides the four- and six-year graduation rates of IU172 students. Reference rates for CSU and subgroups overall are available in Table 2 and Table 3 of the Appendix.
More than two in five (42.4%) IU172 students graduated within four years. Rates for FG (36.6%), LI (38.0%), and RM (37.9%) students were slightly lower than the overall IU172 average by about four to five percentage points and SRS students’ rate was about nine percentage points lower (33.2%). By their sixth year, almost two-thirds of new IU172 students had graduated (65.1%). Six-year graduation rates for IU172 FG (60.6%), LI (63.3%), and RM (61.9%) students were similar to the overall while SRS students continued to lag by about 10 percentage points (55.7%).
The four year graduation rates for new IU172 students were lower than the overall four year graduation rate for new students. As noted, 42.4% of new IU172 students graduated in four years compared to 49.5% of the three most recent new student cohorts. FG, LI, and RM IU172 students four-year graduation rates were about two to five percentage points lower than their peers (e.g., 38.0% IU172 LI versus 41.0% all LI), however the IU172 SRS four-year graduation rate was similar to the overall SRS rate (33.2% versus 31.9%). The overall six-year graduation rate of IU172 students was similar to the overall CSU rate for new students (65.1% versus 65.9%), and rates for FG, LI, RM, and SRS IU172 students were at least three percentage points higher than all CSU students from these populations (e.g., 61.9% IU172 RM and 63.3% LI versus 58.9% CSU RM and 58.9% LI).
On average, about three in five transfer IU172 students graduated in four or six years (63.2% in four years and 65.5% in six years). Just over half (55.3%) of FG transfer students graduated in four years, which increased to 61.1% by the sixth year. LI transfer IU172 students graduated at rates similar to the overall IU172 rates (63.8% four-year and 65.0% six-year) while RM student graduated at slightly lower rates (58.5% four-year rate and 57.1% six-year rate).
Compared to all transfer students at CSU, IU172 students’ four-year graduation rate about two percentage points lower than all transfer students (63.2% versus 65.5%) and the six-year graduation rate was six percentage points lower (65.5% versus 71.7%). The four-year graduation rate for transfer IU172 RM student was similar to the overall transfer RM rate (58.5% versus 59.5%) but dropped by eight percentage points by the sixth year (57.1% versus 65.1%). LI IU172 students’ four-year graduation rate was higher than the overall LI rate by about three percentage points at four years (63.8% versus 60.9%) and about one percentage point lower at six years (65.0% versus 65.9%).
Conclusion
IU172 enrollment was associated with strong academic performance of its participants for both first time and transfer students. This correlation also held for students historically under-served. IU172 successfully supported students in the area of career orientation as those enrolled in the seminar had higher major declaration rates, especially among under-served groups.
