First Year Commuters FA13-FA23

The following tables include demographic and persistence and graduation rates for First Year Commuters. First Year Commuters include new, first-time full-time, Main Campus students from the FA13 through FA23 cohorts who lived off-campus at any time during their first year at CSU.

The number of students living off-campus during their first year averaged about 250 students prior to FA20 (Table 1). In FA20, the number jumped to about 400 students (likely due to the pandemic) and leveled-off to about 300 students for the three most recent cohorts. Students with underrepresented identities (first generation, racially minoritized, and limited income) were more likely to live off-campus than their non-underrepresented peers.

Overall, persistence and graduation rates for First Year Commuters were about 3 percentage points lower when compared to the university’s overall rates (Table 2). First generation commuters’ second and third fall persistence rates were about 4 percentage points lower than the overall commuter rates; graduation rates were about 9 percentage points lower (Table 4). Racially minoritized (Table 3) and limited income students (Table 5) had similar persistence rates to the overall commuting population. The gaps in graduation rates for these students were smaller (about 3 percentage points lower). Figure 1 displays the second fall persistence rates for all First Year Commuters, CSU overall, and commuters with underrepresented identities.

1Limited income status includes Pell recipients as well as those students who did not qualify for Pell (e.g., expected financial contribution above Pell guidelines) and demonstrated financial need (e.g., based on completion of Colorado Application for State Financial Aid (CASFA)).
2Racially minoritized status includes students who identified, in any combination, as Asian, Black or African American, Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Native American, or Latinx/e. Race and ethnicity variables in this table are duplicated, meaning students can identify across several categories (e.g., White and Native American and Latinx/e). Summing race/ethnicity percentages by column will yield a value greater than 100%.
