The Common Data Set is a standard set of definitions and data items intended to improve the accuracy and quality of higher education information. The definitions align, to a large extent, with federal reporting definitions.  The data items are defined by the Common Data Set Initiative (http://www.commondataset.org/) and are provided to college rankings and college search engines.
